Hotel Interior Designs and the use of natural timber

Lately I have been noticing the use of raw, or natural oiled timbers used throughout hotel suite interiors.  From a feature wall using oak timber floor boards laid horizontally, drift wood decorator pieces and furnishings or engineered timbers on the floor.  Generally it creates a feeling of nature, serenity and relaxation, however I think designers have incorporated these elements into the design scheme to either complement its surroundings, or create a sanctuary in an otherwise crazy busy location (aka city-scape).

Two hotels have really stood out to me in the last year whilst traveling both in Miami and Sydney – these are 1 Hotel South Beach Miami and the newly refurbished Pullman Sydney Airport.  1 Hotel Miami is an absolute must should you ever find yourself in that part of Florida – even if only to enjoy a cocktail in their incredible bar.  The driftwood furnishings, timber paneled walls and natural materials used in the lighting and flooring, create an instant feeling of sophisticated serenity. Although this interior reflects its beachside locale, this particular style isn’t limited to a beachside home.  The use of the neutral colour scheme allows you to warm it or cool it with the accessories you use – for example cushions, throws and even flowers.
